Team also made over 180 community appearances
Rockford, Ill.- With the 2010-11 season in the books for the Rockford IceHogs, the American Hockey League team had another outstanding season in the community.
During the club’s 12th season of professional hockey in Rockford and fourth in the AHL as the top affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks, the IceHogs and their generous fans helped raise $111,250 through the IceHogs Charitable Foundation.
Once again in 2010-11, the IceHogs major fundraiser was the 12th Annual Jersey Auction. This season’s auction raised $34,156 and in 12 seasons, the team’s annual event has generated over $613,000 for local charities including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, Rockford area Boys and Girls Clubs, Jr. IceHogs and more.
Other fundraising efforts in 2010-11 included the “Pink In The Rink” event in January that raised $27,203 for breast cancer research and awareness, Bowl-A-Thon benefiting the Sydney Ives Foundation which raised $5,377 and nearly $30,000 raised through school fundraisers given directly back to the participating schools in the Rockford area.
In 12 seasons, the IceHogs have raised over $770,000 through the team’s Charitable Foundation.
Fundraisers weren’t the only way that the IceHogs gave back in 2010-11 as the team made 183 community appearances, including 64 by the players and coaches during the busy 80 game season. The focus again this season was local elementary and middle schools in the Rockford area.
For the first time, the IceHogs adopted a school in 2010-11 as the team adopted Hillman Elementary School in Rockford. The team made several appearances at the school that included reading and “Q and A” sessions with the players. Every classroom at Hillman also made field trips to the MetroCentre.
Field trips included a tour of the MetroCentre, the IceHogs locker room, and students learned how the ice was installed, what the players’ diet consists of and got an opportunity to receive autographs from the team.
IceHogs “Man of the Year” Kyle Hagel conducted a reading program through “Hockey Players 4 Kids” at Kishwaukee Elementary School in Rockford for the school’s fourth and fifth graders. The program offered the students incentives with the winners getting a chance to play in a floor hockey game against several IceHogs players in front of their classmates.
Rockford’s popular mascots Hammy and Hammer Hog made 115 community appearances in 2010-11 as well including schools, parades, day cares and more.
The team also donated nearly 1,700 tickets to various fundraising efforts and charities throughout the region, totaling 423 donations overall in 2010-11.
