Former Norfolk front office exec and Hampton Roads player to become fifth member of the hall
Norfolk, Vir. – The Norfolk Admirals announced on Wednesday that former goaltender and team executive Mark Bernard will be inducted into the Admirals Hall of Fame, presented by the Virginian-Pilot.
Now serving as the Rockford IceHogs President and Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliates, Bernard will join forward Victor Gervais in the second class to be honored. Former Rockford IceHogs General Manager and current Director of Hockey Administration for the Chicago Blackhawks Al MacIsaac was an inaugural inductee in 2008.
Bernard was a goaltender for four seasons with the Hampton Roads Admirals (ECHL), accumulating a 62-38-12 record with a 3.69 goals against average and a .882 save percentage in 1990-1993 and 1995-96. His 62 all-time wins are second only to Michael Leighton in Admirals history. The Hamilton, Ontario native was a member of the back-to-back Riley Cup-winning teams in 1991 and 1992, appearing in all 14 post-season games and winning 12 of them in 1992 en route to the ECHL Playoffs MVP Award.
Bernard also served in the Admirals front office during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons as Vice President and Assistant General Manager. He was last season's winner of the James C. Hendy Memorial Award as the outstanding executive in the American Hockey League. During his tenure as Vice President, the Admirals saw more than a six percent rise in attendance as compared to the previous two seasons, the fifth highest such increase in the AHL. Six of the top ten highest single game crowds in AHL Admirals history came under Bernard's watch.
The Admirals Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place in a pre-game, on-ice ceremony prior to the Admirals game against the Binghamton Senators on Feb. 20.
