IceHogs recall Turner from Gwinnett

Chicago, Ill.-Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon announced on Tuesday that the National Hockey League club has recalled defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson from the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs.

Hjalmarsson, 21, has been held scoreless in one game with the Blackhawks this season, the team’s regular-season opener against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 10. The Eksjo, Sweden, native has appeared in 35 games with Rockford this season, recording nine assists, 10 points and 41 penalty minutes.

The Blackhawks' fifth choice, 108th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Hjalmarsson made his National Hockey League debut last season, dishing out one assist in 13 games with Chicago. He also tallied 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 47 regular-season tilts and four assists in 12 playoff contests with Rockford.

Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard also announced on Tuesday that the IceHogs have recalled defenseman Brennan Turner from the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL).

Turner, 22, has split time between the Fresno Flacons and Gladiators this season. With Fresno, the 6-3, 220-pound defenseman appeared in 29 games registering two goals and two assists. After the Falcons ceased operations in late December, Turner was reassigned to Gwinnett where he has three assists in eight games.

The recall is the first of the season for Turner. After completing his junior season at Yale University (NCAA) last year, the Winnipeg native skated in four games with the IceHogs at the end of the 2007-08 season.

Turner is expected to be Iowa tonight in time for the IceHogs game against the Chops at 7:05 p.m.

Next Home Game: Friday, Jan. 23 vs. Iowa Chops. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. The IceHogs open a two game home stand before a lengthy road trip when Iowa comes to town. The IceHogs welcome Blackhawks legend Denis Savard to the game and the first 2,000 fans to the game will receive an IceHogs 10th Anniversary poster courtesy of Pepsi, Speedway Auto Mall, Johnson Press, Rasmussen College and Stanley Steemer.
