DRAFT ANALYSIS: SELECTIONS IN ROCKFORD
ROCKFORD, Ill – The NHL Draft has helped the Chicago Blackhawks stockpile talent and prospects throughout the organization over the last several seasons. The IceHogs have boasted several of the top selections in that span, and Rockford’s most recent postseason roster from the 2018 Calder Cup playoffs featured 18 different players who were previously selected in the NHL Draft.
Of the 32 players on the Hogs’ Western Conference Finals squad, 11 were previous picks of the Blackhawks and seven players were selected by other NHL teams. Chicago’s draft picks ranged from second to sixth-round picks, reaching as high as second-round players in Adam Clendening (36th overall in 2011), Carl Dahlstrom (51st overall in 2013) and Graham Knott (54th overall in 2015). The non-Chicago draft picks ranged from first to sixth-round picks, and included selections by the Calgary Flames (Lance Bouma, third round), Los Angeles Kings (J.F. Berube, fourth round), Nashville Predators (Cody Franson, third round), Ottawa Senators (Jeff Glass, third round), Phoenix Coyotes (Henrik Samuelsson, first round), Toronto Maple Leafs (Chris DiDomenico, sixth round) and Vancouver Canucks (Gustav Forlsing, fifth round).
Overall, the 2018 Rockford IceHogs playoff roster featured seven players who were selected within the top three rounds. The round-by-round breakdown of Rockford’s postseason squad included one first-round pick, three second-round picks, five third-round picks and three picks from each of the third, fourth and fifth rounds.
The IceHogs’ 18 drafted players were selected as far back as the 2004 NHL Draft (Jeff Glass) and as recent as the 2016 NHL Draft (Nathan Noel), and included at least one player in each NHL draft in that time span except the 2006 and 2010 drafts. The year-by-year breakdown includes draft picks in 2004 (one player), 2005 (one player), 2007 (one player), 2008 (one player), 2009 (one player), 2011 (one player), 2012 (one player), 2013 (five players), 2014 (three players), 2015 (two players) and 2016 (one player).
