The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that the Sears Tower, the tallest skyscraper in the United States, will be illuminated with the color red at night in honor of the team’s opening series in the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“We are very proud to be able to show our support of the Blackhawks as they embark on their 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs run by lighting the antennas red,” said Dale Clark, Vice President, Operations, at US Equities Asset Management, LLC, the Sears Tower’s managing and leasing agent, said. “The Blackhawks organization and the Sears Tower are both a major part of Chicago’s rich history and tradition.”

Starting tonight, when the team launches its first playoff appearance in seven years, the two television antennas on the roof of the Sears Tower (233 S. Wacker Drive) will be lit red in honor of the Blackhawks. The top of its highest antenna is 1,730 feet above street level, making it the highest point in Illinois. The fourth-tallest building in the world, the Sears Tower was completed in 1973, 47 years after the inception of the Chicago Blackhawks (1926).
