WINDSOR -- Four of the Chicago Blackhawks’ top prospects competed in the 2017 Memorial Cup this weekend, combining for six points in their teams’ respective games during the tournament.
Forward Graham Knott (2GP, 2g-1a-3pts) went scoreless in the Windsor Spitfires’ 3-2 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday before erupting for a three-point effort on Sunday against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Knott netted the first goal of the game just 4:48 into the opening period, tallied a power-play goal in the first minute of the final stanza and registered the lone assist on the final tally of the game at 13:07 in the third period. The Blackhawks’ 2015 second-round pick tallied five shots and finished a team high-tying +5 as the second star of the game during Sunday’s 7-1 victory.
Chicago’s second-round selection from the 2016 NHL Draft, Alex DeBrincat (1GP, 1g-1a-2pts), posted a multi-point effort as well during the weekend, collecting a goal and an assist in the Erie Otters’ 4-2 win over Seattle on Saturday. DeBrincat originally broke a scoreless tie 5:40 into the second period and later assisted on the game-winning strike at 1:36 in the third frame during the victory.
Nathan Noel (1GP, 1g) and Matthew Highmore (1GP) skated opposite Knott during Saint John’s 3-2 loss to Windsor on Friday. While Highmore finished scoreless with a shot and two penalty minutes, Noel tallied a power-play goal to break up a potential shutout at 16:50 in the third period. In addition, Noel also finished the contest having won 10 of 14 faceoffs against the opposing Spitfires.
Currently, Windsor (Knott) boasts a 2-0-0-0 record and has already secured a playoff berth following pool play. Erie (DeBrincat) is 1-0-0-0 through its lone game and Saint John (Highmore and Noel) is 0-1-0-0 entering Monday’s action.
