Grand Rapids, MI – Goaltender Matt Tomkins made a career-high 42 saves and forward Dylan McLaughlin scored the game-winning goal and added an assist as Rockford IceHogs (4-8-1-0) prevailed over the Grand Rapids Griffins (6-3-1-0) 2-1 in overtime at Van Andel Arena Saturday evening.

Game Summary

For the second straight meeting, the IceHogs and Griffins skated a scoreless opening period, but Grand Rapids controlled most of the offense, outshooting Rockford 14-5 in the first 20 minutes. Tomkins (W, 42 saves) was tested early and often and found a groove heading into the intermission.

Tomkins continued his stellar play in the second period, provided 16 more saves to keep the score 0-0. The Griffins generated quality shots throughout the frame and several looks on the power play, but the Sherwood Park, Alberta, native had answers to every challenge.

The Griffins broke the scoreless tie 2:27 into the third period when forward Kyle Criscuolo deflected in his fifth goal of the season past Tomkins at the top of the goal crease. The IceHogs responded quickly on the power play at 7:25 with a blast from Matej Chalupa, beating Griffins keeper Kevin Boyle (OTL, 20 saves) with a drive from the right-wing faceoff circle.

Moving into overtime, the IceHogs withstood early pressure from the Griffins and a missed shot turned into a 2-on-1 for the IceHogs and McLaughlin buried the game-winning marker at 2:14 of the extra skate.

The IceHogs finished the game 1-for-1 on the power play while the Griffins went 0-for-4.
