Rockford, Ill. – Rockford IceHogs goaltender Alexander Salak is having the art classes at Lincoln Middle School in Rockford design a goalie mask that he will wear during the 2011-12 season. The helmet will be raffled off with proceeds going to the Sydney Ives Foundation.
Salak visited with the students at Lincoln last week to go over some items of interest that they could include on the mask, but left the overall design in the hands of the students and their creativity.
The teachers and staff at Lincoln will narrow all the submissions down to 10 finalists. After reviewing the finalists, Salak will select one winning design that he will don during the 2011-12 campaign. The student that submits the winning design will have their name featured on the back of the helmet.
Beginning in December, the IceHogs will sell raffle tickets for the mask at every IceHogs home game. The tickets are $5 each or five for $20. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Sydney Ives Foundation.
Sydney Ives was made an honorary IceHogs team member on May 20, 2009. Ives was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor the year prior. She passed away on Nov. 7, 2009 and the foundation is in her memory. For more information about the Sydney Ives Foundation or to donate, visit sydneyives.com
