Rockford, Ill – Evan Mosey and Kyle Baun each netted a goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Grand Rapids Griffins (24-9-1-2) defeated the Rockford IceHogs (12-20-3-3), 5-2, Saturday night at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
Grand Rapids scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of play on tallies from Dan Renouf, Mike Borkowski, and the eventual game-winner by Martin Frk to notch a 3-0 lead going into the second stanza.
Tomas Nosek extended the advantage just 59 seconds into the middle frame when he found his way past IceHogs’ goaltender Mac Carruth to make it 4-0 and prompt a Rockford goalie swap. Lars Johansson then finished in net for the remainder of the matchup.
Trailing 4-0, Mosey and Baun combined to cut the Hogs’ deficit in half. Mosey got the IceHogs on board at the 13:12 mark, followed by Baun’s toe-drag goal off the post on a setup from Gustav Forsling. The assist marked Forsling’s first point with the IceHogs since he his reassignment from the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this month.
Rockford outshot Grand Rapids, 35-34, but Griffins netminder Cal Heeter turned away all but two of those attempts to help Grand Rapids fend off the IceHogs rally.
