From chicagoblackhawks.com: (link)The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that Chicago Cubs legend Ron Santo will help the team launch their preseason opener tonight by performing a ceremonial puck drop before the club battles the Columbus Blue Jackets at the United Center at 7:30 p.m.
Santo, the former third basemen, currently serves as the Cubs radio analyst on News/Talk 720 WGN, which is also the new radio home of Blackhawks hockey. He captured five Gold Glove awards and was a nine-time National League All-Star selection during his 15-year major league career, 14 of which were with the Cubs (1960-73). Santo ranks fourth in Cubs history with 337 home runs and recorded 1,331 RBI and a .277 batting average during his career. Santo, who had his number 10 was retired by the Cubs on Sept. 28, 2003, is in his 19th season as a WGN radio color commentator.
“We are privileged to have one of the most beloved sports figures in the history of Chicago in Blackhawks colors tonight,” Blackhawks Senior Vice President of Business Operations Jay Blunk said. “Considering that the Winter Classic is being held at Wrigley Field on Jan. 1, we feel that he’s the perfect ambassador to help us start this memorable season.”
