Rockford Ring of Honor Inductee Steve Martinson to Join IceHogs Broadcast Team

Martinson Steve3

Rockford, Ill. — The IceHogs announced today that former Rockford IceHogs head coach Steve Martinson will join team broadcaster Mike Folta on select home broadcasts this season on the IceHogs Broadcast Network presented by BMO. Martinson is scheduled to make his on-air debut this Friday and Saturday when the IceHogs take on the Iowa Wild and Grand Rapids Griffins at the BMO Center. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m., and both contests will be available on AHLTV, the IceHogs' Mixlr channel, and WIFR's 19.2 Circle TV.

Martinson served as Rockford’s head coach from 2004-2007 and led the IceHogs to the UHL’s Colonial Cup Championship in 2007—the team’s only league title. The Minnetonka, Minnesota native finished his tenure in Rockford with all-time IceHogs franchise (AHL or UHL) coaching records for career win percentage (.660), most single season wins (48-twice), and most playoff games coached (39).

Part of the IceHogs’ 25th season celebration features the creation of the team’s Ring of Honor. The Ring of Honor will pay tribute to individuals throughout the franchise’s team history that made significant contributions to the team and to hockey in the Stateline. Last Saturday, Martinson was announced as a member of Rockford's inaugural Ring of Honor class and will be inducted on Saturday, Mar. 23 when the IceHogs battle the Grand Rapids Griffins.

After leading professional hockey teams to 10 separate league championships during his 27-years as a head coach, Martinson is the second-winningest coach in professional hockey, behind only Scotty Bowman, with 1,123 wins—the most ever wins for an American hockey coach.

The former winger joined the coaching ranks after a 15-season professional playing career that featured 49 NHL games from 1987-1992 with the Detroit Red Wings, the Montreal Canadians, and the Minnesota North Stars.
