Moberg Grabs First Pro Tally; IceHogs Fall to Wolves in 2021 Season Finale
Hoffman Estates, IL – Defenseman Cole Moberg registered his first professional goal in the second period, but the Rockford IceHogs (12-19-1-0) fell to the Chicago Wolves (21-9-1-2) by a 3-1 final at Triphahn Center Ice Arena Saturday evening to close the 2021 season.
In a highly physical opening period, the IceHogs established an early shot lead before the Wolves made quick work of their opening power play to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Forward Sean Malone tapped in his fifth goal of the season past IceHogs netminder Tom Aubrun (L, 28 saves on 31 shots) just six seconds into the man advantage at 19:43.
Wolves forward Jameson Rees extended the lead 5:02 into the second period with his eighth goal of the season. The IceHogs would fight back late in the frame as Moberg became the 12th IceHogs skater to pick up their first professional goal this season, slipping a wrist shot from the right point past the pads of Wolves goalie Antoine Bibeau (W, 27 saves on 28 shots) at 17:43.
Late in the final period, Wolves forward David Gust converted for a second power-play marker at 17:49 to reclaim a two-goal advantage and eventually seal the victory. The IceHogs finished the contest 0-for-2 on the power play while the Wolves went 2-for-5.
