Comback falls short as Hogs lose third straight but still pick up a point
Rockford, Ill.- For the last three games, the Rockford IceHogs have needed a comeback.
They finally got one against Manitoba on Thursday at the Rockford MetroCentre, but the Moose pulled through with a 3-2 overtime win to give Rockford their third consecutive loss.
Brad Moran scored the crucial overtime goal at 3:45 in the extra frame with an assist from Maxime Fortunus.
After trailing 2-0 since midway through the first period, Troy Brouwer put Rockford on the scoreboard with a power-play goal at 4:19 in the second period. Derek Nesbitt and Petri Kontiola had the helpers.
And Colin Fraser tied the score at two with another power-play goal at 2:35 in the third period. The assists were given to Niklas Hjalmarsson and Wade Flaherty.
The Moose went up 1-0 with a goal at 3:45 in the first by Mike Brown, with assists from Rick Rypien and Jimmy Sharrow. They followed it up with a power-play goal at 10:31 from Alexandre Bolduc with helpers from Moran and Colby Genoway to make the score 2-0 after one frame.
Wade Flaherty got the nod for the Hogs and had 21 saves in the losing effort. For the Moose all-star netminder Drew MacIntyre stopped 29 shots.
The Hogs were 2-for-5 on the power play compared to 1-for-4 for the Moose. Rockford falls to 2-1-1-0 against Manitoba in the final match-up of the season.
Next Home Game: Friday, Feb. 8 vs. Houston Aeros. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. For the second time in four days the IceHogs and Aeros meet up at the MetroCentre. The first 1,000 fans to the game on Friday will pick up an IceHogs jersey backpack. Friday is also Hammy’s birthday as the IceHogs welcome the Milwaukee Brewers Racing Sausages to the MetroCentre along with several other mascots.
