IceHogs Start Hot; Wild Catch Up in 3-2 Set Back in Des Moines

IceHogs Highlights: IceHogs at Wild - 4/23/21

1st 2nd 3rd Final
Thursday, April 18

Des Moines, IA – The Rockford IceHogs (8-14-1-0) kicked off the game scoring for the sixth consecutive contest, but the Iowa Wild (12-10-4-0) erased two deficits to take a 3-2 victory at Wells Fargo Arena Friday evening.

In a physical first period, the IceHogs open the game scoring as forward Chris Wilkie danced around Wild goaltender Dereck Baribeau (7 saves on 9 shots) 3:33 into the contest. The goal and momentum came shortly after defenseman Dmitry Osipov engaged Wild blueliner Keaton Thompson in a fight just 15 seconds into the game.

The Wild caught a break at 7:53 as the puck bounced away from IceHogs goalie Cale Morris (L, 24 saves on 27 shots) behind the net and in front of the cage for an easy tap-in goal for forward Gerry Mayhew. Less than a minute later, IceHogs Captain Garrett Mitchell pulled the energy back on onto the IceHogs bench with a deflection tally at 8:48 for a 2-1 lead. Late in the period, Wilkie raced down the ice to cancel out an icing call and collided with Baribeau, forcing the netminder to leave the contest and be replaced by Hunter Jones (W, 20 saves on 20 shots).

Wild forward Connor Dewar reset the contest again 1:21 into the second period on the power play, slipping in his team-leading 11th goal of the season under the blocker of Morris. Forward Brandon Duhaime provided the first lead for the Wild and the eventual game-winning goal with five minutes remaining in the middle stanza.

The Wild defense limited IceHogs scoring chances and Jones denied all eight shots in the final period to preserve the victory. The IceHogs went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Wild went 1-for-4.
