Grand Rapids, MI - The Rockford IceHogs fell 1-0 to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday night inside Van Andel Arena.
With just over a minute to go in the 1st period, the Hogs earned a two-man advantage trying to open the scoring. Grand Rapids killed off the first minor penalty and then created a shorthanded rush in the final seconds of the frame. John Leonard blasted in his 19th of the year with 0.4 seconds to go and gave the Griffins a 1-0 advantage.
In the 2nd period, the teams skated even strength the whole frame while trading chances back and forth. Grand Rapids' Sebastian Cossa and Drew Commesso thwarted every chance though and held the score 1-0 Griffins into the 3rd.
Halfway through the final period, Marcel Marcel was hauled down on a breakaway and earned a penalty shot. The lefty forward went in on Cossa, but missed the net on his wrist shot.
Rockford earned a power play with under four minutes to, but the GR penalty kill stood tall and the Griffins hung on for the shutout win.
Up next, the Hogs travel to take on the Manitoba Moose on Saturday, December 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Canada Life Center. Rockford returns to the BMO Center on Saturday, December 27 at 7:00 p.m. The first 1,500 fans 14 and under will receive a youth jersey giveaway presented by Westside Children's Therapy.
