Rockford, IL - The Rockford IceHogs stormed ahead with a five-goal 2nd period and never looked back, knocking off the Grand Rapids 6-4 on Saturday night inside the BMO Center.
It was early and often scoring for the visitors in the 1st period. After earning a power play in the opening five minutes, Dylan James had a rebound pop right to his stick and he snapped in his 5th of the year into a yawning cage.
Halfway through the frame, the Griffins banged in two goals in the span of 1:25. William Lagesson's point shot redirected off the glove of Noah Downer Nilsson and past Stanislav Berezhnoy in the Rockford net. Moments later and on a 5-on-3 man advantage, Axel Sandin-Pellikka blasted in the Griffins third goal of the 1st period from up high in the zone.
Down 3-0 heading into the 2nd period, the Rockford offense woke up in a big time way. Jamie Engelbert started the rally when he slid the puck in from the crease after Cavan Fitzgerald's point shot leaked through Carter Gylander.
At 7:07 of the 2nd, Marek Vanacker recorded his first as pro picking up a loose puck in the slot and waiting out the Griffins' goaltender to bring the IceHogs to down 3-2. Four minutes later on the power play, Derrick Pouliot skated towards the right circle and snapped in the tying goal off the far post and in.
Now even, Rockford pushed for its first lead of the game and found it with Vanacker's second of the period. The rookie exited the penalty box, picked up a pass from Gavin Hayes and fired far side for the 4-3 advanatge. Hayes extended his point streak to eight game with two assists.
After great work in the offensive zone winning puck battles, Landon Slaggert fed a cross-ice pass to Sacha Boisvert who went upstairs over Gylander's shoulder to extend the IceHogs lead.
With the goalie pulled in the late stages of the 3rd, Jacob Bryson cut the deficit to 5-4 with a wrister from the near wing. Pressure was mounting as the Griffins emptied the net once more. A.J. Spellacy took advantage of the opportunity and potted his first professional goal
