ROCKFORD, Ill. – The American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs today announced they have agreed to terms with forward Brett Welychka on a one-year AHL contract through the 2018-19 season.
Welychka, 24, completed his junior season at Carleton University in Ontario in 2017-18 where he served as captain and led the team in scoring with 31 points (12g, 19a) in 28 games. The 5-10, 188-lbs forward logged at least 20 points and scored double-digit goals in each of his three seasons with the Ravens from 2015-18, completing his collegiate tenure ranked sixth all-time at Carleton in career scoring with 98 points (36g, 62a) in 72 games. He was honored as the 2015-16 USports Rookie of the Year during his freshman campaign after leading the nation with 32 assists in 27 games, and was a USports (OUA East) Second All-Star Team selection during his junior season.
The London, Ontario native signed an Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO) with the Manitoba Moose following the conclusion of his junior campaign on March 3, 2018. He skated in eight games with Manitoba, scoring his first professional goal on March 14 at Texas and tallying his first AHL assist on March 26 vs. the IceHogs.
Welychka also captured a bronze medal with Team Canada at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He finished second on the team with five goals and third among Team Canada skaters with eight points in six games during the tournament.
The forward played his major-junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the London Knights (2010-15) and Belleville Bulls (2014-15) from 2010-15. The former Belleville captain amassed 148 points (64g, 84a) in 242 career OHL games, while capturing OHL championships with London in 2012 and 2013. He established career highs with 22 goals, 34 assists and 56 points during his 2013-14 season with the Knights.
