Rosemont, Ill. – The Rockford IceHogs (9-13-2-3) overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period to force overtime, and Spencer Abbott scored the game-winner in a shootout to defeat the Chicago Wolves (13-10-3-2), 4-3, in an Illinois Lottery Cup matchupSunday afternoon at the Allstate Arena. The IceHogs have now won back-to-back games since snapping their nine-game winless streak Saturday.
Kyle Baun led Rockford with a three-point night, scoring a goal and assisting on each of the Hogs’ two scores in the third period.
Trailing 3-1 and entering the frame, Martin Lundberg brought the IceHogs to within one goal of Chicago when he finished off his own rebound at 9:02, tucking a backhand shot under the crossbar for his sixth goal of the campaign. Tanner Kero then forced overtime on his goal with just 5.3 seconds remaining on the clock. Kero was set up by Abbot, who held a puck into the zone at left point before finding Kero at the top of the circle. Kero extended the play on an extra pass, and when Rockford snapped a last-second shot, Kero found the rebound to knot the score force overtime.
Abbott scored the lone shootout goal to seal Rockford’s win.
