Des Moines, IA - The Rockford IceHogs fell 4-3 to the Wild at the Casey's Center on Saturday night.
On a well-executed power play in the 1st, Derrick Pouliot fired a blue-line slapshot that Brett Seney deflected in for an early 1-0 lead. The goal marked Seney's first of the year and back-to-back games with a power play score for Rockford.
The Wild evened the game less than two minutes later, with Michael Koster netting a rebound shot to make the score 1-1.
After a slew of penalties, the IceHogs and Wild were playing 3-on-3 hockey for nearly a minute towards the end of the 1st. Iowa seized the moment, and Carson Lambos scored to give the Wild a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.
Iowa added to their lead in the 2nd. First, it was Ben Dexheimer scoring from the deep right point to give Iowa a two-goal lead. Later on in the period, a Rockford turnover in the defensive zone allowed Hunter Haight to score an unassisted goal and give the Wild a 4-1 lead going into the 3rd.
Rockford fought back in the 3rd with Jiri Felcman scoring his second goal of the season with assists from Seney & Cavan Fitzgerald to make it a 4-2 game. Rockford's comeback attempt looked to be in full swing as Connor Mackey fired in what would have been his first goal of the season before it was called off due to a crease violation. With 4:14 remaining in regulation, Gavin Hayes made up for lost time and netted Rockford's third goal of the game to bring the game within a single score.
With 0:04 remaining in the game, Iowa goaltender Riley Mercer stopped an A.J. Spellacy shot attempt to give the Wild a 4-3 victory.
The IceHogs move to 1-2-0-0 on the season, while the Wild improve to 2-1-0-1.
Next time out, the IceHogs return home on Friday, October 16th, at 7:00 p.m. to host the Iowa Wild. It's 90s Night and a $3 Beer Friday, with tickets available at icehogs.com.
