Blackhawks acquire defensemen Robertson and Massie from Carolina for Versteeg and Nordstrom

Chicago, Ill. - The Chicago Blackhawks announced today they have acquired defensemen Dennis Robertson and Jake Massie and a fifth-round selection in the 2017 National Hockey League Draft from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forwards Kris Versteeg and Joakim Nordstrom and a third-round selection in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Robertson, 24, tallied 17 points (3G, 14A) over 57 games in his first full professional season with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League last season. Robertson made his professional debut with Charlotte against the Rockford IceHogs on April 19, 2014.

The Fort Saint John, British Columbia, native previously tallied 70 points (17G, 53A) over four seasons at Brown University of the NCAA, including two seasons as team captain. He led team defensemen in scoring all four years, including 17 points in his senior campaign (6G, 11A). Robertson was named All-Ivy League First Team in both 2013 and 2014, as well as Second-Team All-Ivy in 2012. He was also named the ECAC Best Defensive Defenseman in 2014. Robertson was selected in the sixth round (173rd overall) by Toronto in the 2011 NHL Draft.

Massie, 18, recorded 11 points (6G, 5A) in 14 games with the Boston Jr. Bruins U18 and 20 points (5G, 15A) in 35 games with Kimball Union Academy. He previously totaled 28 points (10G, 18A) over two seasons at John Rennie High. The Hudson, Quebec, native was selected by Carolina in the sixth round (156th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Versteeg, 29, notched 34 points (14G, 20A) in 61 games with the Blackhawks last season en route to the 2015 Stanley Cup championship. He was also a member of the Blackhawks’ 2010 Stanley Cup championship team. The Lethbridge, Alberta, native has amassed 275 points (116G, 159A) in 473 career NHL games with the Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers. He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (134th overall) of the 2004 NHL Draft. Versteeg appeared in 56 games with the IceHogs during the 2007-08 campaign, notching 49 points on 18 goals and 31 assists.

Nordstrom, 23, recorded three assists in 38 games with Chicago last season on the way to the 2015 Stanley Cup championship. He also added 16 points (9G, 7A) with Rockford last season. The Stockholm, Sweden, native has tallied six career points (1G, 5A) over 54 career NHL games, all with the Blackhawks. He was selected by Chicago in the third round (90th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. Nordstrom served as the IceHogs captain in 2014-15 while posting nine goals and seven assists for 16 points. He recorded 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points in 92 games from 2012-15.
