CLEVELAND, OHIO – The Cleveland Monsters erupted for five goals over the first two periods to down the Rockford IceHogs 5-0 and complete a two-game weekend sweep Saturday afternoon at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Combined, the Monsters potted 12 unanswered goals from the second period of Friday’s contest through the conclusion of Saturday’s game. Zac Dalpe (2a), Nathan Gerbe (1g, 1a) and Andrew Peeke (1g, 1a) each posted multi-point efforts for Cleveland in Saturday's rout.
Rockford surrendered the first goal of the game for the first time this season after previously scoring before opponents in each of the first six games. Ryan Collins skated in from the right dot and blasted a puck top-shelf past goaltender Matt Tomkins to provide the only offense the Monsters would need in their victory.
Cleveland netminder Veini Vehvilainen turned away 29 shots to earn his first career AHL shutout. Tomkins finished with a career-high 38 saves.
The IceHogs were again held scoreless on the power play while also allowing a power-play goal. The Hogs are a combined 0-for-29 on the power play this season and have allowed at least one power-play goal in each game in 2019-20.
Next Home Game: Wednesday, Oct. 30 vs. San Antonio Rampage | 7 p.m.
The IceHogs return to the BMO Harris Bank Center to host the San Antonio Rampage. Wednesday’s contest is a Dogs Days game, where fans are invited to bring their dog to the BMO for the evening's game. In addition, hot dogs will be available for just $2.
