Becomes the sixth IceHog in the AHL era to wear the “C”
Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs announced Tuesday that defenseman Brian Fahey has been named the team captain for the remainder of the 2011-12 season. Fahey replaces Brandon Segal, who was traded to Tampa Bay last week, and joins Jim Fahey (2007-08), Tim Brent (2008-09), Jake Dowell (2009-10), Garnet Exelby (2010-11) and Segal as the sixth player in the franchise’s AHL era to serve as captain.
Fellow defenseman Ryan Stanton and forward Rostislav Olesz will flank Fahey as alternate captains.
Fahey, 30, is in his ninth professional season and first in Rockford. He made his NHL debut last season with the Washington Capitals, scoring one point (1a) in seven games. The defenseman also won a Calder Cup with the Chicago Wolves in 2008.
The Glenview, Ill. native has recorded three goals and 14 assists this season for the IceHogs. He is one of two Hogs skaters, along with Stanton, to suit up in every game this season (56). A former fourth round draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche in 2000, Fahey played in his 600th career game on Jan. 22 in Rockford’s 2-1 win over Milwaukee.
Stanton, 22, is in his second full professional season with both being spent in Rockford. In 56 games, the St. Albert native has nine points (9a) and 91 penalty minutes. The blue-liner played in 73 games in his rookie campaign last year for Rockford, tallying three goals and 17 points.
Olesz, 26, has played in 35 contests for the IceHogs this year, his first in Rockford. He has registered 11 goals and 19 assists in those games. Drafted seventh overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Olesz is now in his seventh pro season.
Hogs Next Game: Wednesday, Feb. 29 vs. Abbotsford Heat. Game time is 7:05 p.m. It’s another Taco Bell Dollar Day as the IceHogs face off against the Heat for the final time in 2011-12. Fans can take advantage of one dollar beers, hot dogs, soft drinks and companion tickets.
