ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Chicago Blackhawks, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League, announced that they have agreed to terms with current IceHogs goaltender Matt Tomkins on a two-year, two-way contract that runs through the 2020-21 season ($700,000 average annual value).
Drafted in the seventh round (199th overall) of the 2012 National Hockey League Draft by the Blackhawks, Tomkins is 5-4-0 with team bests in goals-against average (2.45) and save percentage (.916) over nine appearances with the IceHogs this season. He made his AHL debut during the 2017-18 campaign, appearing in eight games and recording his first victory on Jan. 19, 2018 at Cleveland. In parts of two seasons with the IceHogs (2017-18 and 2019-20), Tomkins is 6-8-2 with a 3.17 GAA and .895 SV%.
Tomkins, 25, was named the ECHL Indy Fuel's team MVP last season after setting single-season club records in wins (29), games played (54) and minutes played (3,221). He finished the year with a 29-19-4 mark, a 3.04 GAA, .905 SV% and two shutouts. Overall in the ECHL, Tomkins ranked first among netminders in minutes, tied for first in wins and second in saves (1,550).
Prior to turning pro, Tomkins skated for four seasons (2013-17) with Ohio State (NCAA), totaling 47 games played for the Buckeyes and setting career marks with 12 wins and a 2.48 goals-against average during his senior season.
