BLACKHAWKS SELECT EIGHT PLAYERS DURING THE 2012 NHL DRAFT

Chicago, Ill.-The Chicago Blackhawks drafted forward Teuvo Teräväinen (TAY-vo Terra-VINE-en) from Jokerit of Finland’s SM-liiga in the first round (18th overall), along with defenseman Dillon Fournier (48th overall), forward Chris Calnan (79th overall), forward Garret Ross (139th overall), defenseman Travis Brown (149th overall), forward Vincent Hinostroza (169th overall), goaltender Brandon Whitney (191st overall) and goaltender Matt Tomkins (199th overall) to complete the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. over the weekend.

Blackhawks Draft Pick Bios:
Teräväinen, 17, registered 11 goals and seven assists in 40 regular-season tilts with Jokerit during the 2011-12 campaign, and added six points (2G, 4A) in nine SM-liiga postseason contests. He also tallied 22 points (13G, 9A) and a +14 plus/minus rating in 13 games with Jokerit’s under-20 club. The Helsinki, Finland, native paced his country’s entry at the 2012 World U-18 Championships with six assists and totaled eight points (2G, 6A) in six games during the tournament.

Fournier, 18, ranked second among club blueliners with a career-high nine goals and 29 assists for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Rouyn-Noranda Huskies during the 2011-12 campaign. The Dorval, Quebec, native was the first overall pick in the 2010 QMJHL draft, taken by the Lewiston MAINEacs and after that team folded following the 2010-11 season, Fournier was the first overall selection in the QMJHL dispersal draft by Rouyn-Noranda. He skated for Team Quebec at the 2011 World Hockey U-17 Challenge, notching three points (G, 2A) in six games.

Calnan, 18, posted 28 goals and 27 assists in 27 tilts in his junior campaign at Noble & Greenough School in Massachusetts, leading his club to the New England prep school final. He also tallied 19 points (9G, 10A) in nine games with the Cape Cod Whalers. Over two seasons at Nobles, the Norwell, Massachusetts, native has notched 80 points (42G, 38A) in 54 contests.

Ross, 20, ranked fourth on the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit with a career-high 25 goals and fifth with a career-best 54 points, and paced the club with 93 penalty minutes in 60 regular-season games. During the OHL postseason he shared second on the team with six markers and added four assists in 12 contests. The Dearborn Heights, Michigan, native has registered 80 points (38G, 42A) and 307 penalty minutes in 156 regular-season tilts over parts of three seasons (2009-12) with Saginaw, and added 14 points (9G, 5A) in 30 postseason contests.

Brown, 18, paced club blueliners in goals (7), assists (24) and points (31) and shared the overall team lead with a +19 plus/minus rating in 66 regular-season games with the Western Hockey League’s Moose Jaw Warriors, and added two helpers in 10 postseason contests. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native has posted seven goals, 25 assists and 45 penalty minutes in 69 regular-season tilts over the last two seasons with Moose Jaw, and appeared in 13 postseason games.

Hinostroza, 18, ranked second on the club with 20 goals and 44 points and shared the lead among team forwards with a +11 plus/minus rating in 55 regular-season games with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League. The Bartlett, Illinois, native has registered 28 goals, 38 assists and 92 penalty minutes in 105 regular-season tilts over the last two seasons with Waterloo. Hinostroza represented Team USA at the 2011 World Junior A Challenge, tallying a goal and three assists in five contests, is committed to attend the University of Notre Dame.

Whitney, 18, posted a 22-4-4 record with two shutouts and a 2.74 goals against average in 36 appearances for the Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League during the 2011-12 season, his first full campaign with the club. The Kentville, Nova Scotia, native won a bronze medal with Team Canada at the 2012 World U-18 Championships and represented Team Atlantic at the 2011 World U-17 Championships.

Tomkins, 18, compiled an 18-11-2 record in 33 appearances during the 2011-12 season with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The Sherwood Park, Alberta, native is committed to attend The Ohio State University.
