Rockford, IL - An unlikely duo stole the show early, and the captain handled business from there. The Rockford IceHogs beat the Texas Stars 4-3.
Rockford started about as well as you could possibly expect. Only 20 seconds into the game, IceHogs captain Brett Seney was left uncovered in the slot and set up Martin Misiak with a great feed for Misiak's first goal of the season. With the assist, Seney tied Brandon Pirri's all-time Rockford IceHogs scoring record with 214. The IceHogs took a 1-0 lead less than 30 seconds in.
History didn't take long to unfold in the BMO Center. Just over three minutes later, still only four minutes into the game, Seney got to work again. This time Seney found Gavin Hayes, who swung around the back of the net and sent a shot right at Stars' goaltender Brandon Halverson. Halverson couldn't contain the loose puck, and it dribbled into the net. Misiak picked up the secondary assist, but with the primary, Seney became the undisputed greatest point-scorer in IceHogs history.
After a defensive stop, the jumbotron flashed a graphic of Seney taking over the number one position, and from the bench, he gave a wave to a roaring Rockford crowd. History didn't take long tonight.
Texas continued to fight. With eight minutes remaining in the first period, the Stars found an opportunity off a faceoff in the Rockford defensive zone. Texas' Trey Taylor ripped a shot under goaltender Drew Commesso's arm to cut the IceHogs' lead to 2-1 going into the first intermission.
The Stars kept some of that momentum coming out of the break. After a handful of chances, the visitors cashed in at the 13-minute-mark with forward Dylan Hryckowian shooting right through Commesso's legs to tie the game 2-2.
It was a 2-2 game all the way until less than a minute to go in the second period, when Jiri Felcman netted his third goal of the season, and the third of the night for Rockford. The IceHogs took the 3-2 advantage into the 3rd.
In the 3rd, the IceHogs took the chance to extend their lead. It was none other than the captain, Brett Seney, who came screaming in off a rebound of a Cavan Fitzgerald shot. The goal was originally called no good on the ice, but upon review, Seney legally deflected the puck in with his chest. Improbable, but undeniable.
Jack Anderson brought the game back within one with a score at the 13:22 mark for Texas, but the IceHogs held on for their first win in front of a BMO crowd, 4-3. Commesso racks up 13 saves, and Seney ends the night with three points.
The IceHogs travel to Iowa next, but return home on Saturday, November 7th at 7:00 p.m. for Day of the Dead Night against the Grand Rapids Griffins. There will be a live pregame performance from Mariachi Lira de Rockford; the first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a Hammy Sugar Skull Bobblehead, and there will be a special Day of the Dead Jersey Auction.
