McLaughlin and Busdeker Shine in Wild Night in Iowa

IceHogs Highlights: IceHogs at Wild - 4/24/21

1st 2nd 3rd Final
Monday, December 23

Des Moines, IA – Forward Dylan McLaughlin recorded a goal and two assists and rookie D.J. Busdeker added two tallies to send the Rockford IceHogs (9-14-1-0) over the Iowa Wild (12-11-4-0) 5-3 at Wells Fargo Arena Saturday night.

Early in the contest, Wild forward Cody McLeod snapped the IceHogs’ six-game game-opening goal-scoring streak at six contests with his second goal of the season at 2:10. The rest of the frame became highly physical and tempers flared on both benches, resulting in 40 combined penalty minutes (Rockford with 17).

The IceHogs fought back in the second period as Busdeker deflected in his fourth goal of the season over the pads of Wild netminder Hunter Jones (L, 24 saves on 28 shots) at 4:29. Defenseman Dmitri Osipov gave the IceHogs a 2-1 lead off a blast from the right point at 15:51 for his first goal of the season. Forward Carson Gicewicz earned his first pro point with the primary assist and becomes the 13th IceHogs skater to grab his first pro point within his first two pro games. With 32 seconds to play, Wild leading scorer Gabriel Dumont snuck in his 10th marker of the season past the glove of IceHogs goalie Ivan Nalimov (W, 36 saves on 39 shots) to reset the contest, 2-2.

In the third period, the IceHogs reclaimed the lead with Busdeker’s second goal of the contest 3:39 into the frame and McLaughlin followed up at 6:30 with a power-play goal for his third point of the contest for a 4-2 IceHogs advantage. Iowa’s Connor Dewar responded almost immediately, tapping in a rebound 32 seconds later to pull the game back within one. With pressure mounting from the Wild and Jones pulled for the extra attacker, IceHogs Captain Garrett Mitchell sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 41 seconds to play.

The IceHogs went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Wild went 0-for-6. The man-advantage marker snapped a five-game power-play goalless drought and the victory snapped the IceHogs’ nine-game winless streak at Iowa (0-8-1-0).
