ICEHOGS SWEEP ADMIRALS, EXTEND POINT STREAK TO EIGHT GAMES
Rockford, Ill. –Two late third-period goals from the Milwaukee Admirals threatened a Rockford IceHogs win after the Hogs went up 3-0, but Rockford kept Milwaukee off the board the rest of the way to take a 3-2 victory over their Midwest Division rivals on Sunday night at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
With the win, Rockford is now on a season-high eight game point streak, going 7-0-0-1, including winning their last four in a row. Of the seven wins in Rockford’s current point stretch, four of them have come against the Admirals.
The IceHogs held a 3-0 lead with less than five minutes to go in the game, but Taylor Beck gave the Admirals life with his 12th goal of the season. Beck, who was stationed right in front of the IceHogs net, picked up a pass from Jani Lajunen and beat Carter Hutton at 15:56 to make it a 3-1 game.
Milwaukee then cut Rockford’s lead down to one just two minutes later with a power play goal from Chris Mueller. Beck carried the puck behind the IceHogs goal and fed a pass to Mueller, who fired a shot that snuck behind Hutton to make it 3-2 at the 17:59 mark of the final frame.
Rockford, though, held off the Admirals the rest of the way to take the victory.
Ryan Stanton opened the scoring for Rockford with a power-play goal at 13:06 of the opening frame. Jeremy Morin got the puck to Stanton on the blue line, and the second-year defenseman blasted his second goal of the season past Jeremy Smith to make it 1-0. Including his tally tonight, Stanton has four points (2g-2a) in his last four contests.
Just one minute into the second period, Rockford gained a two-goal advantage over Milwaukee. Byron Froese gathered the puck in front of the Admirals goal and sent it over to Brandon Svendsen, who put his third goal on the campaign past Smith glove-side for the 2-0 lead.
At the 2:24 mark of the final frame, a goal from rookie Rob Flick pushed the IceHogs lead to 3-0. Philippe Paradis started a rush into the Milwaukee zone and passed the puck to Wade Brookbank. The veteran forward then fired a shot on goal from the right faceoff circle that Smith blocked down, but Flick picked up the rebound and tapped it in for his third marker of the season.
Rockford went 1-for-6 on the power play, while Milawukee tallied on one of their three man advantage opportunities.
Carter Hutton turned away 24 Admirals shots to earn his 17th win of the season. Smith was tagged with the loss, making 33 saves.
Next Home Game: Tuesday, March 20 vs. Hamilton. The Bulldogs are in town for the second and final matchup against the IceHogs in 2011-12.
