Rockford drops a 3-1 decision to the Moose
Winnipeg, Man.- A second straight strong showing by Hannu Toivonen went for not by the Rockford IceHogs on Friday night as they fell 3-1 to the Manitoba Moose at the MTS Centre. Toivonen made 38 saves one night after shutting out the Moose on 29 saves.
Scoreless heading into the third period, Manitoba would finally crack Toivonen on their 66th shot of the weekend. On the power play, rookie winger Jordan Schroeder blasted his second goal of the season over the glove shoulder of Toivonen at 7:02.
Schroeder later tacked on his second goal of the night when he cleaned up a Mario Bliznak rebound on the back door at the 7:00 mark of the final frame. Then with Toivonen on the bench Jeff Tambellini buried an empty net goal at 18:07 making it 3-0.
Rockford would ruin Tyler Weiman’s shutout when Jeremy Morin snuck in his team-leading fifth goal of the season at 19:05 of the third, set up by Kyle Beach.
Despite getting outshot 16-4 in the first period on Friday night, the IceHogs skated into the first intermission scoreless. Toivonen turned away all 16 Moose attempts while Weiman made four saves for Manitoba.
The second frame wasn’t much different than the first and the game remained scoreless at the second break. Manitoba sprinkled 15 shots in on Toivonen while Weiman faced nine Rockford attempts. Both goalies, however, were up to the task once again.
The contest marked the third straight in which Rockford held Manitoba scoreless after 40 minutes, but the IceHogs only won two of those contests. Overall Rockford was outshot 41-23 in the contest. Rockford finished 1-7 on the power play while Manitoba was 1-5.
Next Home Game: Wednesday, Nov. 24 vs. Lake Erie Monsters.
