Rockford, Ill- A three-goal second period was too much for the Rockford IceHogs to overcome as they fell 4-1 to the Lake Erie Monsters on Friday night at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
After a scoreless first period, Lake Erie got the scoring started with a blast from Greg Mauldin. Mauldin hit a hard slapshot from the blue line that found the back of the net, giving Lake Erie a 1-0 lead just 49 seconds into the second period. Tyson Barrie picked up an assist on the play.
Then, Hugh Jessiman gave the Monsters a 2-0 lead with a power play goal at 6:42 in the second stanza. Brad Malone made a pass to Jessiman from behind the IceHogs net, and the former IceHogs forward flipped the puck over Richards’ shoulder for his eighth goal on the campaign.
One minute later, the IceHogs came back to make it a one goal game. Jeremy Morin fired a shot that Trevor Cann blocked down, but Peter LeBlanc was there to tap in the rebound to make it 2-1 at the 7:42 mark of the second period.
Lake Erie came right back to regain the two-goal advantage after Ryan Stoa fired a shot that Richards initially caught in his glove, but the puck bounced out and over the goal line, giving the Monsters a 3-1 advantage at 11:09 of the second period.
Stoa then sealed the game for the Monsters at 10:33 of the third period with his second tally of the night. After an IceHogs turnover, the Monsters found themselves on a four-on-two rush into the Rockford zone. Malone fed Stoa on a give-and-go and Stoa shelved his fourth of the season to push the score to 4-1.
The IceHogs were held off the board on the power play in three chances while Lake Erie converted on one of their three man advantages.
Salak stopped all nine shots he faced but left the game early in the second period with a lower body injury. Richards was tagged with the loss, making 24 saves. Cann stopped 34 IceHogs shots to earn the win.
