Rosemont, Ill. – The Rockford IceHogs (7-10-1-1) had a furious comeback effort thrwarted by the Chicago Wolves (8-8-1-1) on Saturday night at the Allstate Arena. Trailing 2-0 halfway through the third frame, the IceHogs fought back to within a goal before falling by the final 3-2 score.
Tyler Barnes stayed hot for Rockford, knocking home his third goal in the last two games to start the comeback effort. Jeremy Langlois won a faceoff back to the blue line and Viktor Svedberg blasted a shot to the cage. Barnes tipped the puck into the bottom right corner of the cage to cut the score to 2-1.
Wade Megan answered back just 2:23 later when he snapped a shot inside the left goalpost to finish off a three-on-two rush and restore Chicago's two goal advantage.
The IceHogs kept battling, and for the second time this season against Chicago Spencer Abbott had to have a goal reviewed to ensure it crossed the line before the period time expired. After a shot from the left point was stopped by Jordan Binning ton, the rebound was forced free to Abbott on the right side, and quickly snapped the shot home with just .6 seconds left in the game.
Bryce Gervais had started the third period scoring frenzy when a deflected pass landed at his skates and he flipped the puck into the top left corner at 9:15 of the frame.
Andrew Agozzino broke through for the game's first goal at 7:35 of the second stanza. Petteri Lindbohm fired a slap shot from the left point which was stopped by Rockford goaltender Lars Johansson. The rebound deflected away to the right side of the crease, and Agozzino popped the puck into the net to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Late in the frame, Jake Dowell was issued a match penalty for a check to the head of Wolves center Wade Megan, giving the Wolves a five-minute major power play that continued into the third and ended the game for Dowell. The Wolves held their 1-0 lead through 40 minutes of action.
Both teams were strong on the penalty kill, as Rockford denied the Wolves on a five minute power play and held the team to 0-for-3 in the game. The Wolves, meanwhile, shut down Rockford on :59 of five-on-three time in the first frame and held the club to 0-for-5 in the game.
