Brossoit Talks His Comeback From Injury and Stint in Rockford
Laurent Brossoit etched his name into Rockford IceHogs history during his conditioning stint in Rockford becoming just the third goalie in franchise history to record a goal.
Brossoit, 32, sent the BMO Center into a frenzy Friday night when he scored his first professional goal with an empty net in the final moments against the Milwaukee Admirals.
"It was pretty incredible. Definitely not something I expected to even attempt today. I'm happy I got an opportunity and sailed it high enough and long enough." Brossoit said.
Brossoit, 32, was signed by Chicago as a free agent on July 1, 2024 and has yet to appear in a game for the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks assigned Brossoit to Rockford for a conditioning stint on Dec. 12 to see his first game action in well over a year.
"My body feels great in a lot of ways a lot better than I would have anticipated at this point in my recovery," Brossoit said. "A lot of the reads, seeing the puck and the way I'm moving in the net feels better than I expected this early."
The 11-year pro played his last game on April 28, 2024 as a member of the Winnipeg Jets before signing with the Blackhawks. He took to the ice for his first game action since that game with Winnipeg on Dec. 12 against the Colorado Eagles.
"To get back after the year that I've had was definitely pretty surreal. There were some points in my previous rehabs this past year that things were looking pretty bleak. To be out there at all was an absolute blessing," Brossoit said
IceHogs Head Coach Jared Nightingale was encouraged to see Brossoit feeling strong on the ice after his layoff of over a year.
"He looked sharp and said he felt healthy and I think that's the biggest thing," Nightingale said.
Brossoit credits both the Blackhawks organization and his family for their support over the last year through this process that has made his return to the game of hockey possible.
"On both sides it's been a hard situation to navigate trough and I wish I was contributing more the last season but they've [Chicago] handed things as good as you can possibly handle these things," Brossoit said. "My family is the reason why I'm here today and still in action," Brossoit said. "As much as I've grinded over the last year, my wife has grinded tenfold more to help me recover. I am so grateful for her."
The 32-year-old is now the 25th goalie in the 90 year history of the AHL to record a goal and joins Collin Delia and Jaxson Stauber as the only goalies in IceHogs' history to score a goal.
The IceHogs will return to the BMO Center Saturday, Dec. 27 against the Texas Stars. The first 1,500 kids 14 and under will get a youth jersey giveaway presented by Westside Children's Therapy. Tickets are available at IceHogs.com
