Game Preview: IceHogs and Wolves Open Next Chapter In Rivalry
Rockford, Il- The Rockford IceHogs will make their first trip to Rosemont as they open the season series against the Chicago Wolves with a 7 p.m. puck drop at All State Arena. The IceHogs look to continue their win streak after Oliver Moore delivered an overtime-winning goal Friday night against the Texas Stars.
Three Things To Know:
Feels Like The First Time: The Rockford IceHogs begin the season with a 3-0 record for the first time since joining the AHL following their 2-1 overtime victory over Texas. The previous best start to an IceHogs season came in the 2017-18 where they won the first two games of the season. The IceHogs have also notched two overtime wins in their first two home games; Rockford did not pick up their first overtime win till late February.
Goalie Tandem Stands Tall: Drew Commesso made 29 saves in Friday's overtime victory. Commesso has a 1.46 GAA through his first two starts in the 2025-26 campaign. The former Boston University has stopped 64 of 67 shots to begin the season. Rookie netminder, Stanislav Berezhnoy made his AHL Debut Sunday in Des Moines. The Novokuznetsk, Russia native faced 31 shots against the Wild, making 29 saves to earn his first AHL victory. Berezhnoy, 22, earned six wins in 13 starts with Neva SKA in the VHL last season.
Tale Of The Tape: The last time the two in-state rivals met, it was during the opening round of the Calder Cup Playoffs last spring where the IceHogs swept Chicago in the best-of-three series. Artyom Levshunov scored the overtime game-winning goal in game one at All State Arena to give Rockford a 1-0 series lead before the IceHogs put up a 5-0 win in the decisive second game of the series. The Wolves have played just one game this season, picking up a 4-1 win over the Iowa Wild last weekend.
Heard It Here First:
Jared Nightingale on overtime victory:
This was a strange game, they took it to us in the second period and a lot of the third and then tied it up but I thought Drew [Commesso] gave us a chance to find out legs again.
