Spooky night at the MetroCentre

10/28/2010 1:21 PM - Mike Peck

The IceHogs hosted their annual "Trick-or-Treat with the Hogs" Wednesday night at the Rockford MetroCentre.

Despite a very hard fought 4-3 shootout loss to the Texas Stars, all the members of the IceHogs returned to the ice after shedding their equipment to hand out Candy to about one hundred young IceHogs Fans.

Courtney King was on hand to catch all of the action as well as have a Halloween chat with Ryan Potulney.

THE GOOD

Never Say Die: For the second straight game the IceHogs found themselves trailing multiple times over the night.  Despite this less than ideal situation the IceHogs never quit and battled back three times in the match-up taking the Stars to the shootout.

IceHogs 2nd Line: With Jeremey Morin still on the mend and Hugh Jessiman making his debut tonight, a little line shuffling had to be done by the IceHogs coaching staff.  Kyle Beach took up the right wing position on the second line along with Brandon Pirri and Jeff Taffe.  The new combination found some chemistry tonight, with all three potting goals.  Taffe and Beach also added assists.

Hannu Toivinen: Toivy started his second consecutive game tonight against the stars and I thought he performed quite well.  It looked like Hannu had some issues finding the puck during the first period but settled into a grove after the Star’s second goal.  The IceHogs likely wouldn’t have found themselves in a position to come back without some of the saves Toivinen made in the middle stanza.

Special Teams: After a slow start to the season the IceHogs special teams seem to have clicked.  The Icehogs went 4/4 on the PK and 2/3 on the PP vs. the Stars. On the Season the IceHogs are now sitting 5th in the league on the PP going 8/41 (24.4%) and have went 22/24 on the PK in their last five games.

THE BAD

Top Kicks: The IceHogs top line had a rough night with all three members, Ben Smith, Ryan Potulny and Igor Makarov finishing with a negative plus/minus.  Potulny registered an IceHogs season game low -3 rating on the night.

Too Many Shooters: I’m not sure how much practice the IceHogs have had in the Shootout but if tonight’s game is any indication they need some more.  7 of 9 shooters where turned away by the Texas Stars goaltender Bret Krahn, with three of the IceHogs shooting the puck wide of the net.

Only One Point: The IceHogs had a solid game Wednesday night in my eyes and deserved two points vs. the Stars.  Points become very important at the end of the season, hopefully tonight won’t came back to bit the Hogs down the stretch.
