SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Adam Musil scored the go-ahead goal halfway through the third period and Jordan Binnington stopped 14 of 15 pucks as the San Antonio Rampage eked out a 2-1 victory over the Rockford IceHogs Saturday night at the AT&T Center.
Rookie netminder Kevin Lankinen kept the IceHogs close throughout the contest in pursuit of his first AHL victory. He made a season-high 19 saves but ultimately suffered his second loss in three starts with Rockford.
After the two teams played scoreless hockey through nearly two full periods, Austin Poganski put San Antonio on the board with his first tally of the season. Jordan Nolan collected the puck in front of the net and fired several quick shots on Lankinen. The IceHogs netminder fended off the first few attempts, but as the puck slid to the stick side of Lankinen, Poganski tipped the puck under the goaltender for the first tally of the game.
Jacob Nilsson helped the IceHogs respond with a power-play marker of their own with just 1:55 remaining in the second frame. Carl Dahlstrom worked the puck to the point and fired a shot on goal with big-bodied forward Justin Auger providing a screen. Nilsson redirected the shot behind Binnington to tie the game 1-1 heading into the third period.
Musil then dealt the decisive blow 9:07 into the final stanza, blasting a shot past Lankinen stick-side for his first career goal against the IceHogs. Binnington remained tall in net, making six saves during the third period, to shut the door on Rockford and preserve San Antonio’s win.
The Hogs won five straight road games from Oct. 20 – Nov. 10, but have since dropped each of their last three road contests.
