10/02/2012 3:27 PM - Rockford, Ill. – Intensity picked-up on the third day of practice for the Rockford IceHogs as the team remained split into two squads – Red and White. The teams scrimmaged once again for two 20-minute halves, but each squad played like it was a regular season affair.
Fighting for a spot as one of the Hogs’ goalies, starting in net for Team White was Mac Carruth and Kent Simpson for Team Red. The white squad was unable to take advantage of a couple of power play opportunities as Team Red finished two-for-two in the first half on the penalty kill. Both goaltenders, Carruth and Simpson, finished the half with shutouts.
As the second half began, Alec Richards substituted in net for Team White and Carter Hutton for Team Red. Without a goal on the board, play heated up as the number of hits, checks and pushes increased. The defense stayed stingy and each squad remained perfect on the penalty kill. Finally with 2:09 left to play, a scrum in front of Richards allowed the puck to slip in off of Jimmy Hayes’ stick, giving Team Red a 1-0 lead. Team Red was able to hang on to a 1-0 victory.
While some players are auditioning for their role on the IceHogs, overlooking in the stands were members of the Chicago Blackhawks front office and hockey operations staff.
