It was about 30 degrees and snowing, just enough to remind everyone it was winter -- and for a hockey player, a perfect day.
At an outdoor rink nestled in the midst of the city’s south side, on the campus of University of Chicago, were approximately 50 youth hockey players.
Kids showed up proudly displaying their youth hockey jerseys – Falcons, Ice Dogs, Huskies, Stars, Knights, Admirals, Eagles, Wildkits -- to name a few… holding on to their “lucky” stick.
Each representative, chosen through a contest at their local rink, walked to center ice, took a few stickhandles, and looked toward the small opening carved out on a board covering the net.
And after some nail-biting chances, four finalists were chosen to move on to the next round.
On Sunday, December 14th, during the Blackhawks home game at the United Center, these young hockey players will vie for their chance to win the ultimate prize - 2 lucky winners receive four tickets to the Winter Classic game on January 1st and a chance for a couple youth hockey players and some of their teammates to skate on the same surface as their heroes – Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp.
These four finalists will represent their rink and hockey club:
Now that’s a perfect day – for a hockey player!
