2014 NHL DRAFT: CHECKING UP ON THE HAWKS DRAFT PICKS

Rockford, Ill. - This weekend, the Chicago Blackhawks will be looking to add prospects to their system with the 27th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, and eight total picks in the draft. This year, the Florida Panthers have the number one selection. The Entry Draft will be in Philadelphia, Penn. at the Wells Fargo Center.

In last year’s draft, the Blackhawks chose seven players. With another year for developing and refinement to take place, the Blackhawks will be looking to see if any of them can make a strong impression for the upcoming season.

Today, IceHogs.com will be taking a look back over the past two years draft selections and what they accomplished in 2013-14.


2012 Blackhawks draft picks:

Teuvo Teravainen was the Blackhawks first round selection (18th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. This past season, the 19-year-old forward skated with the Rockford IceHogs after playing with Jokerit Helsinki of the Finnish Elite League. With Rockford, he played in five games and tallied two goals (2g) after making his NHL debut and playing in three games with the Blackhawks. With Helsinki, his third season with the team, he racked up his career high of 44 points (9g-35a). Teravainen is considered by many as the top prospect in Blackhawks organization.

Dillon Fournier was a second round selection (48th overall) for the Blackhawks in 2012. This past year, the 19-year-old forward completed his third season with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Fournier recorded 32 points (13g-19a) on the season in 36 appearances. Fournier signed a three-year, entry level contract with the Blackhawks on March 10.

Right wing Chris Calnan was selected in the third round (79th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Calnan completed his first season with Boston College (NCAA) where he appeared in 37 games totaling 13 pts (4g-9a). 

Left wing Garret Ross was a fifth round draft choice (139th overall) for the Blackhawks in 2012. He agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level contract with the Blackhawks last year and was then assigned to the Rockford IceHogs on Sept. 23. Last season, Ross played in 74 games and chalked up 34 points (15g-19a) with the Hogs. In 2013-14, Ross received the IceHogs Rookie of the Year award.

Fifth round draft pick (149th overall) Travis Brown finished his fourth season with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2013-14. The 6-2 defenseman tallied 38 points (9g-29a) with the Warriors where he ranked fifth in points. Brown also appeared with the Victoria Royals (WHL) in 2013-14 where he recorded 15 points (5g-10a) in 28 games.

Bartlett, Illinois native Vince Hinostroza was selected in the sixth round (169th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old forward completed his first season with Notre Dame (NCAA) where he scored eight goals and 24 assists. Hinostroza completed his third season with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2012-13 ending with a career high of 60 points (25g-35a). 

Goalie Brandon Whitney was selected in the seventh round (191st overall) of the 2012 draft. Whitney completed his fourth season with the Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in 2013-14. He tended the goal in 41 contests this past year and had a record of 13-18-7.

Matt Tomkins was selected 199th overall in the seventh round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. After his second year with the Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL), Tomkins appeared with Ohio State University (NCAA). He ended the season with a record of 6-7-2 and a save percentage of .911 in 17 games. 


2013 Blackhawks draft picks:

Right wing Ryan Hartman was selected in the first round (30th overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Hartman made his professional debut with the Rockford IceHogs where he played in nine games scoring seven points (3g-4a). Before Hartman joined the Hogs, he played with the Plymouth Whalers and racked up 53 points (25g-28a) in 52 games. He finished second on the Whalers in points during the regular season. 

Carl Dahlstrom was the second round draft pick (51st overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. In 2013-14, the 19-year-old defensemen appeared with the Linkoping HC (SweHL) for 12 games marking one assist and 23 games with Linkoping J20 (SuperElit), totaling 2g-12a-14pts.

Center John Hayden was selected 74th overall in the third round in the 2013 draft. The Chicago, Ill. native completed 60 games with the U.S. National Development Team (USHL) before playing with Yale University (NCAA). With Yale, Hayden appeared in 33 games and tallied 16 points (6g-10a) in 2013-14. 

Stockholm, Sweden native Robin Norell, a fourth round draft pick (111th overall) in 2013, played as a left wing with the Djurgardens IF Stockholm (Swe-1) last season. With the Djurgardens, the eighteen-year-old tallied five assists along with ten penalty minutes in 22 games.

As a previous player on the U.S. National Development Team (USHL), St. Clair, Michigan native Tyler Motte was the final pick in the fourth round (121st) in the 2013 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old played center with University of Michigan (NCAA) recording 18 points (9g-9a).

Nineteen year-old center Luke Johnson was selected in the fifth round (134th) in 2013. Johnson, a former player of the Lincoln Stars (USHL), played with University of North Dakota (NCAA) last season. Johnson played in 42 games scoring eight goals and 13 assists. Johnson ranked ninth in scoring with North Dakota.

Anthony Louis a sixth round draft pick (181st) in 2013, signed his letter of intent to skate for Miami University in Ohio (NCAA) in the fall of 2013. As a freshman this past season, Louis appeared in 36 games accumulating 25 points (12g-13a). Overall, Louis ranked fifth on the RedHawks in scoring and tied for fourth with 12 goals.

Defenseman Robin Press was selected in the seventh round (211th) and was the last pick for the Blackhawks in the 2013 draft. Before playing with the Almtuna IS (Swe-1) in 2011-12, Press played with the Sodertalje SK (Swe-1) in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Last season, Press played in 51 games, chalking up 15 points (4g-11a) for Sweden’s 1st division.
