For A Good Cause

07/30/2009 3:25 PM - Chris Etheridge
As most have already heard, we had a bit of a scare a couple of weeks ago with Mike Peck.  See earlier in the blog for an explanation from Mike.  We're grateful to have Mike back in the office, healthy and happy.  It really wasn't the same place without him.

Our team prsident, Mark Bernard, has asked me to designate three game-worn jerseys from last season to sell as a benefit for Mike.  The proceeds from the sale of jerseys (Akim Aliu and Bryan Bickell) this week will go to Mike's hospital bills.  We are moving the schedule around a bit for this little benefit and I'm posting the Sean McMorrow jersey from last year a couple of weeks early.  I'm sorry if this inconveniences anyone, but we felt this was an important cause.

Please spead the word about the benefit and bid on the jerseys this week.  If you know anyone who really wanted the McMorrow jersey, please let them know we're moving the on-sale date.  It's certainly going to a good cause.

I Was Wondering About That

I was thinking yesterday that I hadn't heard anything about Mike Blunden's future for a while, when an e-mail came into my inbox that said this:

Syracuse, NY (July 21, 2009) – The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed right wing Mike Blunden to a two-way, NHL-American Hockey League contract.  As per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed. (source: Syracuse Crunch press release)

Blunden played 2 1/2 seasons in the Chicago Blackhawks minor league system including 1 1/2 in Rockford before being traded to Columbus for winger Adam Pineault.  He appeared to pick up his game a bit last year, recording 21 points (9g-12a) in 39 games with the Crunch.  Those numbers were much improved from the 10 points (3g-7a) in 37 games he put up in Rockford.

He was rewarded at the end of the season with a recall to the Blue Jackets after the Crunch were eliminated from playoff contention.  He served as a postseason reserve player for Columbus in the same way that eight IceHogs were recalled when Rockford was eliminated.  Now the Columbus Dispatch is speculating that Blunden could be considered for a fourth line spot on the big club this fall.  Sometimes those "change of scenery" trades do work out for a player.
